Daily Routine -navigation
Here is a quick look at the daily check list to get underway and go! 24 hours in a nutshell
oil check – most important… everyday!
fuel suction – as I start the engine I take note of the vacuum gage to see if the fuel filter is clogged or not.
route transfer – from the route planning the night before I transfer the planned route to all devices. This includes from the ipad to the Chart plotter and to my phone and a second ipad.
iais – I fire up the AIS program and make sure that it is interfaced with the chart program (Aqua Map) running on the ipad.
ipad setup- start the navigation program on the ipad and chart plotter, while the engine is warming up.
coffee – I had probably put the kettle on before this. The coffee is made and I take a cup to Val, who is still sleeping.
heat – Once the engine is warm I turn on the heat exchangers to warm the head and the main cabin.
anchor up – time to heave up the anchor. So glad to have a windless. This usually wakes Val up as there is 30 feet of chain and 100 feet of rope rhode coming down into the anchor locker at her feet.
travel 8-12 hours
breakfast – When Val gets up she makes a glorious breakfast. We usually have been under way a couple of hours by this time.
anchor – When we arrive at our planned stop we drop the hook
refreshment- Time for a glass of wine and can of beer. I found a great cheap IPA called “All Day IPA”that can be had for about $1 a can.
supper- Usually made aboard but when we would come to a Marina about once a week we might dine out.
TV – usually binge watching a series. We were using verizon on the phone with unlimited data! Usually streaming netflix.
plannng for next day- one to two hours of looking at charts, reading coast pilots and other cruising resources, checking active captain and Waterway notes. Charting the course on the ipad and checking it on a several charts on paper and several zoom levels on the device.
bed – day is done, pre dawn comes early!
